Memory

Hi,

Has anyone else experienced a difference between their long and short term memories? I find that I can remember particular incidents from long ago to a striking level of detail, including from my early childhood. However, my short term memory is often very poor; I can forget something I did ten seconds ago. I changed jobs around a year ago, and I've found that since that point, I struggle to remember tasks and organize myself. I think this was hidden in my previous job, because in that role, I created bespoke routines for myself that I stuck to rigidly, meaning that I relied on habit rather than memory per se.

  • That's fairly normal for humans - short term memory uses a different part of the brain, and won't be as good or reliable.  If you want to remember things, you have to put plenty of effort in so your brain knows its important and stores it in long-term memory.  You learned routines which helped with your last job, so it became automatic, but now you aren't using those routines and may be struggling to learn new routines which help with your new job.  All you can do is try and learn new routines that help you.

  • I see- so you suggest that's a common trait amongst the entire population (i.e. it doesn't particularly relate to neurodiversity)?

  • Yes, though difficulties learning and storing/recalling memories can be caused by neurodiversity - poor executive functioning for example.  Its also about the conscious and subconscious minds, as the conscious mind (when we use thoughts to do tasks) is slow and less reliable - if you learn routines, they usually get performed by the subconscious mind and work much faster and more reliably (you do them without thinking about what you are doing).
