Stimming

Hello everyone, :)

So this is something I’ve noticed about myself for a while and only noticed it was something to do with my AS which is I hum twice or I’ll  bite my lip and also I’ll  rub my fist together which I do a lot when I’m on my PS4 so it’s like a comfort? I never mentioned this at my diagnosis a years ago as I didn’t think of it at the time, I just want to know if anyone does a similar thing? I know that younger children do this but I’m 32 so I’m not sure?

thanks

  • i'm 66 and diagnosed at 63. i discovered i actually seem to stim - but only when smoking pot. i rock, i make bizarre, almost inhuman noises, rub my finger tips a bit. do these count as stimming? i'm really not sure. i am under the impression they are sometimes characteristic of asd. i never new i did this before... sometimes these behaviors bust out when i'm not high at all, but rarely. they're controllable, but i've been hiding from everybody, and myself, for 62 jerked up years.

rocking is sometimes for comfort, usually due to anxiety. only when on thc.

  • It’s something I hide from other people as well when I rub my fists I feel I get a buz inside like all around me is safe, maybe when you’re smoking it’s like a safety behaviour?

  • the finger rubbing? maybe... it might be a satisfying sort of feeling, as i recall... by safety behavior, you mean you do it when you feel safe? i could relate to that, i think. well, like i said, rocking sometimes when i am anxious, and the rocking is not very satisfying, actually, other times, rocking in satisfaction...
