Going to the GP about my health anxiety - need reassurance that I am fit and healthy, that the stress is not killing me

I have finally summoned the courage to visit the GP about long standing aches and pains (on and off for 10 years), bodily tension, that I believe is caused by my anxiety. I am thinking about pain all the time, and look out for it even when it isn't there. Minor aches are always magnified in my mind. Having a logical mind, though, I know that a medical will provide the reasurance that I need. If my vital functions are shown to be normal, and if my symptoms are simply caused by anxiety and panic, then CBT will be far more effective - because I will have proof that the stress has not damaged my body.

The thing is, I never visit my GP.The last time I visited was three years ago, whenI became convinced I had *** cancer. I was sent to the hospital for a scan, and there was nothing there. The GP himself told me I was fine, but he knew I wanted reassurance. I hate having hypochondria/health anxiety, and I fear death all the time. I am hoping that this GP visit will cure me of my health anxiety.

  • but in these countries it is pay and go or do not pass go,, but in the UK it is two systems pay and go (private) and NHS wait and see ! The standard of care is falling as we know by experience and the recently 10 hospitals which killed people by mass.

THE UK IS BASICALLY A SPLIT COUNTRY, those who have and those who do not have again, back to the 1900's again and before, the masters and slaves model.

I hate the UK ! potential down the drain.

I am glad emigration stands at 350,000 people every year, although 550,000 cheap labour immigrants come into the UK.  Those 350,000 leaving the UK each year, half of those are graduates and management levels,, the knowledge workers who have sense. But the government london plc does not care because when unhappy people leave the country it prevents revolution, hence the america's  was populated and formed by a revolution outside the UK and Europe, so the same thing is happening again.  So the UK government keeps this fact very quiet... However long-term, I am laughing as 6 million foreign immigrants in a country of 66 million total,, will have an social impact which the government will not be able to control, especially if Romanians and Bulgarias come to the country in next few years... nationalism is rising via UKIP and BNP but this will fail because the European people are already here and with Indian visa's available,, THE UK HAS BASICALLY NO SECURE BORDERS, so it can not defend the social policy , therefore nor provide SOCIAL WELFARE due to expansion costs, and because social change is too quick for the government, so it creates private companies from public assets so it can control the multiple boardroom Chairmans position for further influence and power later on in Europe, as Britain de-centralise it assets(steals from the people). Basically there friends of privy circle OWN Britains assets by carve up corruption.

I have a plan which I will take down to the chinese embassy Wink, the chinese to offer every graduate or person with technical qualifications a guaranteed job in China, with a new job, a new house and living conditions, called it Chinbritain. Half the country would empty in a minute ! and finding a place for 20 million or so british people in china would just be easy like Hong Kong 2. Lets call it the Great Red Cultural Exchange.

So what I am saying here is simple, another million or two europeans enter Britain, the balance of social britain has changed so the government of Britain will change or be changed, and Central Europe knows this so it floods Britain with social chaos by political design.

  • lol,, Mum of 3,,,quote "maybe not China", but SEE you are up for the suggestion, like millions looking for a better chance of future prosperity ? How about Canada, Australia or Europe Smile

  • Hope I have the same issue, high cognitive response with high emotional(low coping response). The GP says it is due to hard wiring of the my autism brain. All he says is take beta-blockers for the anxiety and an anti-depressant long-term. However if I speak to my head doctors they say always get phyisical pain checked out. CATCH 22. again

For me,  I ideally need a doctor who is aware of the autism spectrum and understands my autistic anxiety and can reassure me as part of my condition requires. I am sorry, but in my autistic mind, if you have bowel pain you get a test, not a doctors ex-ray eyes test, hundreds of thousand die this way, but if I pop into a private clinic, the doctor says, "I can't tell what is wrong, until I do some test or examination" . SEE HOW THE NHS KILLS PEOPLE BY PROXY, I @!!!&8% hate this soddy country ! Everything just depends on economical access and were you live. THINK I'LL get a caravan in OXFORD OR CAMBRIDGE, and to make matters worst the prince of greece gets a helicopter for a bladder infection and her surpremeness gets the shits and put in hospital for monitoring, I HATE THIS COUNTRY !!!!!!!!!!!!! SO MUCH.., UNFAIR BRITAIN !

  • Private health insurance, like car insurance,, is a financial cream off by underwriters who are the names on the lloyds underwritter lists or names are they call them, lord and sir so and so.., who pass the risk back onto the population by higher premium, low payouts,, ANOTHER SCAM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!  IT IS MATHEMATIC'S, it is a zero risk calculation based on pot size and returns,, it does not matter want the commodity insurance is.. THEY COULD DO THE SAME WITH PENSION OR ANYTHING ELSE,, IT IS A CREAM OFF SYSTEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE THE UK

  • Hi Hope - I'm pleased things worked out so well for you at the doctor's - it was worth going, wasn't it?  Now you can focus on working to overcome your anxiety.

Autism 2 - I'm sure you know that beta blockers are commonly used to treat anxiety, esp for those who get panic attacks, so they do have their uses, especially for those who've tried other methods to overcome anxiety/panic but haven't succeeded.  Yes, Britain can be an unfair country in a number of ways + the unfairness is being made worse by the economic crisis, but many other countries are far more unfair than this 1. At least we don't have to pay for private health insurance (yet).

  • Feel more reassured. The doctor took my pulse (it is normal and regular) and my blood pressure - very healthy, despite being a nervous wreck at the time!. The aches in my chest, she said, are caused by anxiety. My heart is healthy. Phew, a relief, the stress is not killing me yet!. Now I can work on overcoming my anxiety and learning how to relax with a weight lifted off my mind.

  • Thanks crystal12. My biggest fear is that the stress will kill me. I sometimes get achy feelings in my sternum that only last for a few seconds, and are generally very mild, but they scare the living daylight out of me. I then tense up, my heart pounds (due to feeling anxious), and I then don't go out. The aches , which only last a second or two, usually occur when I am stationary, so hopefully it is something to do with posture and anxiety, and not a cardiac issue. I have been having occasional aches in my chest since I was 16 years old, but I have only started to worry about it recently. I also tend to over breath and hyperventilate when I am anxious, and I am chronically tense.

I sometimes get choking sensations in my throat, making me want to cough, and this worries me, too. I am hoping that the doctor will tell me that these symptoms are just products of my anxiety, and that I am otherwise fit and healthy.

  • Hi Hope - I hope your visit to your GP will help.  Some GPs do an annual check-up on patients they rarely see.  It comes under the heading of learning disability but autism is also included.  If your GP does this then it would be blood pressure, urine sample, weight, perhaps a blood test.

People who are anxious/tense/stressed etc can have physical aches + pains, upset digestive system, etc.  However, it can be difficult to know if emotions are causing physical symptoms sometimes so I understand why you feel you need a check-up.  Maybe your GP can help later with your anxiety if you feel better after the visit?
