I’m not sure - have I already disclosed at work?

I’m not sure where I stand. Legally.

As I understand disclosing autism gives the person protection under the Equality Act 2010. But to be protected under the Act I don’t need to provide official diagnosis. Or do I?

Anyway, my situation.

In 2019 due to stress as work I told my manager that I’m on a waiting list to be assessed. I didn’t officially request any adjustments.

Fast forward to 2021 and I’ve got my official autism diagnosis. Should I mention it to my manager?

Or maybe I’ve already disclosed in 2019?

  • Tricky one. Official or not I might not expect your manager to necessarily know how to adjust but I would expect him/her to talk to you about what might help and take OH advice about it.

My lovely boss has been so supportive. I will give him my official diagnosis now so he can tick the OH boxes. OH can look at it and ask him whether he's done x and y and we can confirm he has and more. His backside and mine are both then protected and we can just get on with it.

Of course, I realise I am fortunate with my positive employer. For some it's a risk if people might bully if they know about the diagnosis, even if the Law is on their side. But personally, I'd give HR/OH the official bit of paper. If anything goes wrong, they can't say they didn't know.
