'Severe' Autism

Just wondering if anyone knows a better way of saying 'Severe' or 'low functioning' Autism.

I don't like using labels like this as I feel it diminishes others struggles.

I understand there are those with more support needs but is there a better way to phrase this?

Parents
  • Instead of those labels, describe specific support needs such as ‘this autistic person needs support planning and organising their day as routine is really important to them.’ Another example is ‘this autistic person needs support to travel on public transport as they frequently experience sensory overload.’ If you describe specific needs it is much more useful for the actual autistic person. You can also use ‘high or low support needs’ depending on the situation.
