'Severe' Autism

Just wondering if anyone knows a better way of saying 'Severe' or 'low functioning' Autism.

I don't like using labels like this as I feel it diminishes others struggles.

I understand there are those with more support needs but is there a better way to phrase this?

  • I guess the problem with that is it doesn’t specify the kind of support needed.

like Archimedes. According to some historical sources, comanded an army, had a job advising the king, was a renowned thinker in his own time. Also had to be forced to have a bath by his own family because they couldn’t stand the smell and was known to run around naked in public when he got excited.

I mean issues with hygiene is listed as a support need in some guides. But the support needs of some one like that very different from say someone nonverbal+illiterate. Different from the support needs of an autistic person with supper high anxiety that won’t go outside.

what people need to know when they interact with an autistic person is first can this person answer for them self. Are they competent or does a guardian of some sort need to be involved.

  • I like that. Puts more emphasis on the support/caring side rather than ones internal struggle, if that makes sense?
