New job with OCS

Hi All,

I started a new job "casual work only" & on tuesday 26th of Feb: and had to go to a tesco's branch near Southampton doing a stocktake. But last night I had very bad Panic attack  about driving at night & going a long distance to get there which I'm not used too, so I decided not to go  altogether. This morning I feel very relaxed that I did not go and now feel that I should tell [company] more about my asperger sydnrome, is this a good idea as I hadn't told them in the first place & wasn't sure that i should mention it at all.

So I'm worried that I may get more panic attacks because of this job & the distances that I have to travel to do it. I already have another casual job  working outside in all weathers, in a hi -viz jacket  showing customers where to park there cars at sporting & social events and I haven't had any panic attacks at all with that Job.  Maybe it all of this has something to do with my past employment which was in retail and the stress that went with it !!   Question should I have  a rethink about going back to retail, was not a good idea ?

Regards  Peter0003

  • The panic attacks are just because of an unfamiliar baseline, if you get to know the job inside and out they will go away, however if the engagement forum(environmental stimulas) is too high due to boundary pressures, the panic attacks will not go away.

If you can find a comfort zone within the job or keep busy(focus in the moment), this will help some what.

Retail ? and aspergers ? Tesco's,,, see you in hospital. (sorry that is negative, but my honest opinion).

I am proud  and jealous of you, that you can half function is this environment, I am having a panic attack just thinking of you there, (autism transference). lol

    Good luck hero !

  • Hi Peter,

First of alll congratulations on your new job. I do feel you may have to tell your new employers about your condition. You might find they are more sympathetic  and understanding about your current concerns and may offer you an alterantive.

If you simply don't turn up, they may think you just don't care and don't want the job. However, if they understand your situation that will give them a better opportunity to help you and keep you in employment. in the meantime please speak to your doctor about recommending a counsellor for the panic attacks. I hope this advice helps. Good luck with your future endeavours.
