I thought I would post this poem to see if any other autistic people could relate to it. I hope you find it relatable.
Autism
Autism is not a linear spectrum,
But multifaceted and complex.
Autism means......
Stimming loudly without suppression,
Immersion in a subject with childlike excitement,
Repeating words just because you can
Non speaking but having many words to say
Autism means......
Masking to keep yourself safe,
Losing speech when things get too much.
Intensity and anxiety,
Replaying every single sentence you say and hear,
Analysing each interaction just to make sure it is ‘right’.
Autism means.....
Having a brain that doesn’t slow down
Thinking too much yet not thinking enough .
Needing to know everything in minute detail,
Seeing patterns, inconspicuous to others.
Autism is diversity of experience,
But a shared sense of belonging.
