autistic child: will i ever work

Hi,

I have a child who is on the waiting list for an autism assessment. My child is still only speaking some words and needs one to one supervision constantly.

Will there ever come a time that I will be able to work, or could there be the chance that I will be a stay at home mum forever?

  • Yes, Once you have gotten the right support in place you may be able to work full or part time. No one would blame you for not working even with an neurotypical child as the price of childcare is ridiculous so don't be ashamed. You'll find once your child receives a formal diagnosis and a lot of additional support will be available depending on your sons emotional, Mental and physical capability.

I suggest talking to local organisations such as "the family trust" to help advocate on your behalf as local authority and doctors can be really difficult at time and most of the support is hidden and requires a referral from either a social worker, support worker or doctor. Doctors do not have the time or knowledge to make referrals and will often fob you off so i suggest either bringing and advocate or use a support worker to make the referral.
