New Interlinked Fire, Heat and Smoke Alarm Legislation (Scotland, England and Wales)

Anyone here extremely sensitive to sound i.e unexpected loud sounds gives you panic attacks and/or meltdowns? I moved out of a communal block of flats because I could not cope with the communal alarms persistently activating. They were all hard wired as well as interlinked but each time they went off, I had a severe panic attack followed by a meltdown.  From February 2022, it's going to become law for us to have smoke and heat alarms installed in each room in a flat or house but don't get me wrong, I understand how vital and important these alarms are as well as what purpose they serve.  I just can't cope with more than one alarm in the flat due to previous experience however, knowing we must have an alarm in every room just fills me with severe anxiety about never being able to relax in any room I'm in.

Has anyone or a parent/carer of an autistic person been able to figure out a solution to this problem?

  • Good morning yes I can totally relate as my 25 year old severely autistic son also suffers with sensory sensitivities including severe hyperacusis and.ETD we were served with a NTQ from our home after ONLY one month after my son ripped them out of the ceiling as they were painful to his ears, the government need to listen, I'm trying to build a case through court to offer people like my son and yourself other less invasive options in thier homes as this has caused my son and it seems like yourself a great deal of distress and pain and so I'm taking this matter to the Chambers to have reviewed as I feel it's unfair and against human rights to expect individuals who have severe sensory needs to be expected to not only be exposed to these types of alarms daily but to have to live in fear of them in there own homes.

I've been told the best way to tackle this is head on, and at a policy level which would be to.seek funding be offered to provide voice.command alarms for thier homes that speak to you instead of an alarm screeching at you at a ridiculous octave, these can also be accompined by a strobe or flashing light if needed these should be considered as a replacement for people like yourself, my son and others instead of forcing the ear piercing models they are demanding be fitted in to everyone's home irregardless of need, disability and or circumstances.

if you'd like to join me in this mammoth task or even support this cause in helping to bring this topic out in to the public arena to push for REAL change and at a policy level so that yourself my son and others are given alternative options regarding fire safety within the home.

I'm on twitter talking about it ALL I go by the name What'sthealternativeScotland so feel free to follow and join me on my endeavour to make real changes and force the government to see that one piece of equipment indeed does Not fit all.

  • I'm in. I'm also part of LightAware.org - against enforcing LEDs at the expense of others. There's not enough research here either.

We need proper physics based acousticians in on the problem of these alarms. Turning up a narrow frequency at a band many have actually LOST their hearing at or in a building with concrete/brick is absurd. It is lower frequency waves which penetrate elements far better. The sirens during war raids or an older model of school bell would not be even remotely as damaging and everyone would hear it due to a variance of harmonics in the frequency. A bit like stacking low to high resignations like pancakes. I don't know how we've gone backwards with the science. I wouldn't last one week in a block here.
