Traumatised

I'm physically ill. I feel sick and have knots in my stomach. Why do people always start these horrible conflicts? Don't you realise that you're making people ill with all this bad feeling and name calling? Please stop calling each other racists, fascists and other derogatory names. Just demonstrate tolerance and decline to engage in controversial discussions. Please stop arguing over politics. It's toxic. Leave that to the morons in the outside world and keep this forum safe and supportive.

  • respectfully controversial topics are often very important and intellectually stimulating. Politics effects our daily lives so it's only natural people will talk about it.

  • Peter, as you well understand, controversial topics are not the issue. People are free to discuss whatever topics they want in threads and receive as much stimulation as they require within them. It's the all-too-frequent moral outrage generated by these exchanges which then spills out into the rest of the forum with calls for moderators to ban people, or accusations of racism and other slurs, which is not pleasant. If only they could keep their conflicts to themselves and not attempt to drag others into them.  Politics and political ideologies are, in my view, not something I would not equate with high intelligence, but with extreme arrogance and hubris.

  • respectfully, for some people politics is the difference between knowing whether they are able to eat or not. wouldn't it be hubris to label an interest in it as unintellectual?

But as it happens I agree with you its really not helpful when interpersonal conflicts spread across multiple threads.

  • No, Peter, it would be factual. The greatest minds are unwilling and often unable to confine or restrict their intellect to any form of dogma or inflexible partisan bias and prejudice.
