Parents and adult diagnosis

Hi,

So I had my autism finally diagnosed this week and my mum has taken it BADLY. She blames herself, even though I would not change any aspect of my life. She won't listen to me and she's crying that she's let me down. Has anyone else's parents reacted badly to their diagnosis? And if so, how did you handle it?

Thanks so much,

Sam

  • All Parents let down their kids to varying degrees. But nothing she could have done could have stopped you being autistic. Maybe if she’d known you were autistic and understood what that means she could have helped you been a bit happier growing up. Could have prepared you better for adult life. But autism is a complex condition that few medical professionals are qualified to diagnose and that even many doctors don’t understand that well. How was she supposed to know? You might tell her that. It might help.
