Adult Diagnoses

Good morning

My 26 year old daughter was referred for autism diagnoses around 18 months ago, she received a text from the GP this morning saying they’ve had word back about her autism assessment and unfortunately there’s no funding arrangement for it in Warwickshire. She would have to go private.

My daughter is distraught, she is unable to fund the testing/treatment outright, and, unfortunately due to suffering a recent stroke, I am unable to help either.  She really needs to get a formal diagnosis so that she is able to access services she desperately needs.

Can anyone please offer any help/advise?

Thank you

  • Hello,

Surely if your daughter's  GP wants her to be assessed then she should be!  I think that reply stinks and suggest you write a strong letter to your MP.  If you don't feel like writing then arrange to see him or her at their next surgery, if you are able to get there. They usually have them monthly in different parts of the constituency, their local office will give you the details. Ask them why it took eighteen months to decide there wasn't any funding?  That's a long time to keep someone waiting and hoping in vain.  It makes me furious!

  • Yes, i would take it further, involving the GP, your MP and any NHS complaints procedure too.  Is the local CCG perhaps able to help?  Presumably they are aware of the need for a local autism strategy and at least a diagnositc service in line with NICE recommendations?  Maybe the NAS would be able to advise too.  18 months is a ridiculously long tme to wait only to be told there's no funding!
