Waiting for an Autism Assessment In These Times

Afternoon,

So, I was advised that I had some Autistic Traits by a psychiatrist approx 12 months ago, where he diagnosed PTSD - he recommended my GP to arrange for an assessment - of course with the pandemic - such assessments are being delayed, however due to being signed off work in July 2020, my work would prefer an definitive diagnosis as that would help them be able to help me.

I have been chasing up my GP for the past few months, as it feels like I am waiting for the assessment to help me move forward with my life, and also to see how such a diagnosis can help me live with that as well as my PTSD - triggered by childhood trauma.

I went to a school for children with Speech and Language impediments, so I suspect the Autism was missed at the time, but it has been exacerbated especially by the PTSD, Anxiety and Acute Depression.

As you can imagine, such a delay for the assessment is causing anxiety, which the third party provider stated their wish that it wouldn't when they sent me a letter approximately three months ago, stating that I was on their database.

It feels that I am waiting on other elements which are out of my control.

  • I was referred late 2019 and would still be waiting now if someone hadn't suggested exercising my right to choose and selecting an online national service. I started the process in May and have my assessment in October. It took quite a bit of chasing to get them to see it as an option but they couldn't go against the legislation really. The online service, Healios, looked like a good option for me and helped me through the process too. If you're not bothered about the assessment being face to face then right to choose May be an option for you too. Would recommend having a look online and making your own choice, each of us is different after all:)

  • Hi have been waiting since January 2020 but getting nowhere My GP has got nowhere with CAMHS, is Healios a free NHS service??

  • There's a charge to the NHS but they have a contract with them I believe. Would recommend asking your GP about your right to choose and would google it too.
