Trying to understand my diagnosis

I've only just been diagnosed as having Autism Level 1 this week and I just got my report through with my official diagnosis.

I was assessed using the ADOS module 4 but there's one part of the report I don't understand.

Under 'Imagination and Creativity' it says I was able to show some creative actions but these were limited and stereotyped'.

I don't know what this means. I always considered myself really creative since I've always done a lot of writing and art, and people have always praised me for my creativity, but this feels really demotivating and I don't know what this means. Disappointed

Is anyone able to help me understand what this means?

  • I think it just reflects diagnostic criteria that are outdated. The supposed lack of imagination is a hangover from the days when the only people diagnosed as autistic were rather severely affected and often had cognitive and intellectual impairments. As a broader range of people are being recognised and diagnosed as autistic this will change. Autistics can have an inner imaginative life that is at least as well developed as allistics, and often more so.
