Radios

Hi

Just wondering if anyone else struggles with radios, especially when through walls?
Growing up, I used to have meltdowns if I was up in my bedroom and could hear the radio on in the kitchen. It sounds, and feels, like I have a load of angry flies that are electrically charged in my ears and is painful. Bizarrely, the quieter the radio is, the worse it seems to be.
Now as an adult, I have the problem of living next to an elderly person who is on their own so has the radio on a lot. I can hear it in every room in my house and she has it on sometimes from 8am-11pm all day and I can’t get away from it. I can listen to music for some of the time but I get irritated by having headphones on/in my ears.
I don’t feel I can go round and say something as I don’t want to dictate what someone does in their own home, and actually it’s not blaring out, but it’s just this sensation it gives me and I’d feel so silly trying to explain myself

So I guess the point I wanted to raise is does anyone else have to deal with anything similar and what do they do to help?

Thanks

  • You may be able to do something about it depending on the radio and a few extra finances.

Digital and Satellite radio is hideous. It is grating. It is not analogue and the human brain can detect harsh squared waves digital conversion causes. There is a lack of proper harmonics which is natural to analogue frequencies. Too many things are giving off harsh frequencies these days.

I would first go round with a tin of biscuits and assess the radio. Where it's positioned, what kind it is, and maybe work out if you can buy her a small wind up or battery powered hand held or something that doesn't need to be on all the time in one spot. You could find out if it's conducting through a counter & offer to buy a Monitor Isolation Pads to put it on. Sometimes a folded up cloth can help. She may not know the acoustics are going right through the walls.

Short of sound proofing your home, these are the only things I can think of.

  • U could turn on radio in your own room and tune it to the same station  -   works for me sometimes because i can change the tone on my radio.

turn on a radio and tune it to "no station" to generate white noise ( FM radio with analogue tuner )
