how to have a conversation?

Hi, I feel a bit stupid writing this. I really struggle with conversations and I know that a lot of autistic people struggle with conversations but I was wondering if anyone had developed any strategies for having conversations? How can I have a long conversation? My conversations last about 2 minutes and then I run out of things to say. I would really like some advice.

  • Ask people about themselves, they love talking about themselves. But don't make it an interrogation! How do you do this? No idea.

I'm good at opening conversations but sometimes it's the little "oh! OK!  Ah right!" bits I struggle with and tone of voice for this. And then when it comes to my turn, sometimes I can't think of anything to say. It depends who it's with, what we are talking about,  how much I know them, what context and how much I'm genuinely interested in what they have to say.

I struggle with getting away from people who talk too much. Any help would be appreciated.
