how to have a conversation?

Hi, I feel a bit stupid writing this. I really struggle with conversations and I know that a lot of autistic people struggle with conversations but I was wondering if anyone had developed any strategies for having conversations? How can I have a long conversation? My conversations last about 2 minutes and then I run out of things to say. I would really like some advice.

  • I’ve done loads of training on how to get people to talk about themselves and rapport building.

The starting point is telling people things they already know and agree with like “Hasn’t it been hot recently, I’m glad it’s a bit cooler now” this starts to build trust and starts the NT’s auto pilot.

Once a bit of trust is built you can ask some good open question where there isn’t a quick factual answer like “tell me about yourself” or “do you have children” with any luck this should give you something you can agree with again.

The issue I have is I can’t close conversations down.
