support after a diagnosis

Hi folks,

I recently noticed on my formal assessment document that when diagnosed, I was referred to NAS services to help with a few areas I struggle with (anxiety for example). I had completely forgotten about this and understand there would be a waiting list, then a hold up because of Covid, but I'd love to doublecheck I'm on a waiting list and what exactly the services are. I have emailed NAS and waiting for a reply but wanted to check if anyone here has received support from them; was it one to one or group support, with a psychologist or counselling etc. Please don't feel pressure to go into details if you're not comfortable; any comments are appreciated :)

  • I have not received any support from the national autism society, the national autism society seems to only operate out of major cities and if they are operating outside of major cities then they often operate a few poorly managed care homes for the less independent individuals.

Needs assessment may be options, a social worker will assess you and help arrange and sign post you to specific help. this can include in some areas assistance with employment, education and housing. it can also result in social inclusion finding other autistics, groups and clubs. you may also get a set amount of support a week, for me i have four hours. to arrange one request through local authority, once requested one must be carried out. they cannot deny you an assessment by law.

Your local NHS trust may have post autism support which involves counselling which can help you accept your diagnosis, possible help with a health pass port and other documents needed to help with employment and education and like social worker can sign post you to specific support.

I recommended avoiding the shawtrust and any other organisation with a work and health programme as they are poorly operated and will push you into unrealistic and non sustaining employment & often lack basic knowledge of autism and adhd.
