Asking for a referral for a formal diagnosis

I am planning to ask for a referral to get a diagnostic assessment. The advice on the NAS website says to talk to your GP. Here is my question: Do I need to see my GP, or can it be any doctor at my GP's practice?

This is my first post on the forum. Please forgive me if my question has been answered elsewhere - I haven't learnt how to navigate the forum yet.

Parents
  • here are notes of what you should have ready

    • Make a list of reasons why u think u are autistic.
    • include blood relatives in your family who are autistic or adhd or called weird/different
    • and a list of occasions when u have been called weird, autistic, different
    • the list should be electronic ie so you can email it to anyone who wants it.
  • I've written up a letter explaining why I think I'm autistic and why I think a formal diagnosis will help me. My parents and brother have done the same. I get very anxious and will probably forget what I want to say when I actually see the doctor. I'm hoping I can get a face to face appointment so that I can had over the letters. Not sure what I'll do if its a zoom or telephone appointment. :(

  • email it to them --- have an electronic version. If you send/give/email them an electronic version more of your writing will end up in the final report because its easier to cut'n'paste your writing in.  Also less will be missed by the assessors so your diagnosis will be more accurate
