Asking for a referral for a formal diagnosis

I am planning to ask for a referral to get a diagnostic assessment. The advice on the NAS website says to talk to your GP. Here is my question: Do I need to see my GP, or can it be any doctor at my GP's practice? 

This is my first post on the forum. Please forgive me if my question has been answered elsewhere - I haven't learnt how to navigate the forum yet.

  • Last month I made the decision to go for a formal assessment. I made a list of all the things I thought made me autistic.

    I spoke to the dr on the phone and I told her that I thought I was, I wanted a formal assessment and these are the reasons why. I also explained the impact on my mental health (I have a very long history of anxiety and depression) 

    And she referred me, no problems. 

    I'm lucky I think, as I have my 1st assessment on the 18th Aug. I'm making notes of different things
