Diagnosing Autism in Women

Hi everyone,

I have a 20-year-old friend who suspects that she is autistic and is thinking about getting an assessment, but she has a couple of concerns about the process.

The main concern is that the assessment may be performed by someone who does not know how to diagnose autism in women. So, we are worried that she may be wrongly diagnosed with anxiety or depression or perhaps some personality disorder. If this is a reasonable concern, is there a way for her to arrange an autism assessment from a professional who definitely does know how to diagnose autism in women?

Another concern is that the NHS waiting list for adults seeking an autism assessment can be several years long. Would she be able to get an assessment from a private professional instead?

Thank you for reading this and any responses are appreciated!

  • she can a private assessment quicker but it is around 1000+ quid

if she is getting an Autism assessment via NHS and she has autism they will find it.

why not get her to list her traits ( why she thinks she is autistic and post them here )

also there online tests for autism  do u want a link ?

  • Thank you!

I believe that she has completed numerous online tests for autism and they have always turned out positive!

With regards to private assessment, it's certainly an option however I think it's more of a "last resort" option.

I was going to mention that another friend of mine received NHS diagnosises of anxiety, depression, and an eating disorder during 2016-2019, but she only received a diagnosis of autism in 2019 (via the NHS)... do you believe that the NHS is more knowledgeable about diagnosing autism in women now?
