Getting assessed as an adult

Hi everyone.

I've many traits to suggest I'm on the autistic spectrum, so I asked my GP to refer to be diagnosed by an adult autism specialist as advised here. I did my research beforehand to ensure I knew which specialists were within driving distance and thus most likely to be referred to.

During the phone consult (when asking to be referred) the GP's speech patterns suggested he wasn't sure what he was supposed to do - so I told him - and as part of my explaining he made me read out the entire list of potential traits I've noticed in myself over the years - several of which he didn't understand. My doctors have been graded as incompetent in the industry. I got the feeling something was off but I'm not sure how to describe it beyond that.

They have done nothing for a month but I have had a phone call from an unknown number (which I didn't take) which was followed up by a text message. It's somebody from a local mental health clinic that does not deal with people on the autistic spectrum in any way and has no staff associated with autism. I'm assuming this is what the GP has organised? Nowhere have I read this is part of the procedure, and there is no other reason for that clinic to have contacted me.

They're NOT trained to deal with diagnosing people on the spectrum, so I'm not sure what to do. Did my GP mishandle this or is this the experience some of you have had? What advice do you have?
