Unified Theory of Autism

I found this: https://thepsychologist.bps.org.uk/volume-32/august-2019/me-and-monotropism-unified-theory-autism

Thoughts?

I've also happened across individuals who would love to re-design the whole education system for Autistic children. Articles like this seem to contain a map, or a piece of a "map" to help reframe perspectives and shift the action>consequence involved.

  • From what I understand & have read, these may all fall under Neuro-Divergent thinking. I really like this explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNgLrPkp2y4

However, all of this is still under-researched. For me, finding further exposure of scientific understanding by individuals who are ND is critical to putting all the pieces together.

  • I really enjoyed reading this article. I think a lot about autism and its probably a special interest of mine. I'm not a psychologist so it's all my own analysis and observations as I go about my daily life. This article is really interesting because only in the past week have I put together in my own head about autistic inertia and thinking styles. I have become aware recently that unless I am told differently my mind can stay on the same trajectory unless told otherwise.  Usually autistic inertia is about tasks but I realised last week it could also be to do with thinking.

The article covers itself by saying it's a spectrum and everyone is different etc.... Some people have ADD/ADHD + AS.  I feel monotropism contradicts my understanding of these conditions but I could be wrong.

For me, I like to have answers and think about possibilities. It's interesting how there's no unified theory of being normal.

  • interesting stuff in your link. Most of it is way over my wee head :)

  • There are lot of very interesting concepts there.

I find that the 'Autistic Inertia' really applies to me, and by extension, the scenario one can get into where the main 'trope' is taken away, or completed and suddenly I find myself almost shutdown or completely lacking any purpose whatsoever. Logic suggests that having another project underway or on pause, ready to be engaged with would be the way out of this but in practice, I have plenty of these available but find myself at a standstill and virtually inactive.

  • I actually have a theory of my own concerning autism, either something we don't know yet or something that underlies autism.

After listening to so many autistic people I've come to the theory that "authenticity" is another characteristic in so many autistic people, one after another complaining about conformity and pretending to be people they're not.

I looked online and it turns out I'm not the only one who suspects autism to be a way of living an authentic life.
