Feel like I’m in limbo waiting for my 3 year old son to get a diagnosis

My wonderful 3 year old son is waiting for a diagnosis after the teacher at his school nursery told us back in January he is showing signs of autism. He  currently has a one on one in place which the school have told us they have had to fund themselves from the school budget as they don’t have government funding for him until he diagnosed.
Is there any way we can push this diagnosis forward as they have told us he won’t be moving into reception in September and they will be holding him back. We’re told the waiting list is 18 months which means he won’t be assessed until next summer. My partner is absolutely heartbroken with the whole scenario and is really struggling mentally to deal with just waiting around for the assessment so he can get the support he needs. Is there anything we can do for my boy as I don’t no how much longer I can tell my partner it will all be ok when nothing is happening to help him.

  • Hi Headup, so sorry to hear you and your family are having a tough time at the moment. Hopefully this might help somewhat, you may be interested in contacting a local National Autistic Society branch. Our branches offers support to local autistic people and their families. If you interesting in checking if there is a local branch near to you, please follow the link below:

Every branch and group is different some are parent support groups, some provide support and information to autistic adults, while others have office premises and run their own a drop-in service.  See if you can find one close to you and if they can help.

    Best wishes,
