Not too sure how to approach this - Don't have anyone to ask

Hey everyone haven't been active on here just because of all the drama hope everyone has calmed down now.

I want to just say this to somebody but I don't really have anyone to ask so I thought I'd make a post on here.

I've always loved motorbikes and as I'm getting older I find myself wanting one more and more, but the issue is my entire family are so anti motorbike it's ridiculous. I've tried to bring it up in the past in a jokey kind of way but they all just say the same thing "if you get one of those death traps I will smash it up myself" blah blah blah.

I'm still living at home I have a car but it's quite expensive and now that I'm not doing 140 mile journeys all the time since I split with my ex the cost of the car is getting kind of unnecessary and I would rather not pay for it. I could do my CBT and get all the tests done and I'll be able to get a nice bike that won't cost me £340 a month like how my car is currently.

I just don't know how to bring this up with my mum mainly because it will just turn into an argument and all she'll go on about is the fact that my step dad had a friend that died on a bike a couple years ago. But if I say yeah well I wont ride like a d!ick like he did, (because that's what got him killed he was doing motorway speeds in urban area and broadsided a car).

It's also a bit deeper than the fact I "just want a bike" I have lived my life trying to do the things that I think everyone will approve of and not always doing what I want to do. And seeing bikes just seems so freeing a stress relieving being in the open air like that.

  • My parents were the same when at 19 or so I started talking about getting a bike.  I just went ahead and did it anyway, sooner or later people have to accept you're not a child anymore, you've become your own adult person.  Of course part of that is just taking the reigns rather than waiting for someone to hand them to you.

As others have said, as a mode of transport motorbikes are not really at all practical.  You're going to miss your car on those cold and wet days (which let's face it, in the UK that's most of the year) if you get rid of it.  I used to commute year round in all weathers on my bikes and let me tell you, it can be a very, very miserable experience.  Rain will always find a way in, and it gets everywhere.

That said, "you're only young once" so if it's what you want to do, get out there and do it and don't let anyone hold you back.  Thinking back, using my bike for commuting was a mistake, sucked the fun out of it for me.  If I could do it all again I'd have a very cheap, low maintenance car for getting around and keep my bike for those adventure days where I'd just head out and go wherever the road might take me - which usually resulted in getting completely lost.

  • Hmmm... I think your mum may need to adjust here.

I might worry myself sick if my lad got one, but he's an adult and it's not my place to object.

Think a chat with mum along the lines of 'I appreciate you worry because you love me, but this is my money and my decision now'' might be in order. Then just go get one. You want it and you've earned it. You don't have to justify why you want it to anyone.

I hope that's hyperbole when she says she'd smash it up. That would, of course, be a criminal offence.

  • I'm nerding out on the custom car builds - like 'Retropower' and 'VTuned' and the strange repair vids like 'Arthur Tussik' and 'Ford Boss Me'

  • Haha I love those videos too I love watching moto vlogs too like the royal jordanian and snowcat I don't know why it's just nice to watch for some reason

  • Yeah - the tech is much better now.

I watch a lot of youtubes about car and bike crashes - the bikers are their own worst enemies in almost all the crashes - poor conditions, at night and going way too fast - and getting angry at people pulling out in front of them as they do 150mph on B-roads  Smiley

  • Well I know that now you can get little bluetooth devices that go inside helmets that are like little walkie talkies almost so if you're with people you can talk

  • They used to go on rides together-  even into Europe - I always felt it would be a bit lonely just doing hundreds of miles between hotels on the tour.

  • Haha brilliant I never get magazines for things like cars and bikes but I always like having a flick through when ever see them in shops I just never think to actually buy them haha

  • I worked with a bunch of bikers - they had everything from the old leather belt drive to Fireblades & V-Max etc.

I was the only non-biker - but I used my Aspie super-powers to memorise all of the millions of bike-mags in the tea room  Smiley

My friend has a KTM - it's a few years old now - very reliable..

  • That's sad, I am aware that bikes are more risky than cars and there isn't a way around that fact but I'm not an idiot and I'm a responsible person and I wouldn't ride dangerously. I know that things happen that aren't my fault.

That is a nice bike I do like those more older looking bikes, that VN1500 would look so good in jet black, I already know what bike I would get once I passed all the test for my first bike, I'd get the KTM 390 Duke, or the 125 duke I'm not sure how much power would be too much for a first bike but those seem like a good place to start

  • I've always fancied a bike - but I'm too scared to have to rely on it for transport on the roads around here.       They seem designed to force cars and bikes and trucks into conflict.

One thing I will say is many years ago, my brother was in the local Victorian hospital - long wards, 10 beds either side with an annexe on the end.    My brother was in the 3-bed annexe on the end because he was a child.

Every bed down the ward on both sides had a 17-year old lad with a destroyed right leg - all in Frankenstein traction assemblies - all had crashed their Fizzies and been horribly injured..

It always put me off bikes - even though when I applied for my provisional, if I had ticked a box, I would have had a full bike licence when I passed my car test.    I didn't tick the box.

I would have liked to get a bike - just as a toy - my choice would be a Kawasaki VN1500 Drifter - something that is big enough to be respected on the road.

  • Haha yeah I have thought about that sometimes I've seen videos of people doing what you described I know that I wouldn't be immune to something like that happening but I'm pretty good keeping my self safe and "covering all my angles" so to speak I would just be extra careful in those situations

  • I do understand that is more of risk with riding a bike I'm not blind to it but it doesn't bother me because I know that I won't be a hooligan

  • The only thing is cars have loads of airbags which lulls a lot of people into a false sense of security, on a bike there is only a couple of mm of leather protecting you

  • Well I'm pretty young the physicality of it doesn't seem like it would be a problem and yes I would need to sell or do do a part exchange and sort out the settlement figure I'm not too sure how that works though with bike dealerships if they will part exchange a car for bike

  • i had a motorbike when i was younger, virago 535, pretty damn sweet bike.... got rid of it due to the fact i dont go anywhere anyway so it was pointless having it and paying insurance which was like 1k per year, just waste of money for me.

im a idiot, if im safe on a bike im sure anyone will be lol although i did have a few minor things, one time the back end skidded out around a corner probably due to lots of loose stones on the road or perhaps oil. kept control with my body strength stabilising it though. another time i got myself on a slope position facing downwards and wanted to reverse, ofcourse bikes dont have reverse so you have to push back with feet, and ofcourse its a heavy bike so even on a slight slope i couldnt push it back and infront was another parked bike, so it just kept edging forward lol until one onlooker finally decided to give me a hand and pull me back. so slopes are a pain and you need to watch were you park as you wont be able to reverse it up a tiny slope unless your arnold Schwarzenegger lol

  • Well that's what I always think like even if you drive like an 4ss in car you might crash  the same as on a bike if you ride responsibly you're obviously not going to get in bad situation as often if you ride like a 4ss

  • yes, unfortunately its the d**k heads who film themselves pulling wheelies at 70mph through built up areas that give us a bad name

  • This was what I was going to say, make sure you have a bad weather plan. My husband only had a motorbike for a few years and it was a nightmare for him to get to work on public transport. They do need to be covered and well maintained too to keep them working reliably unlike cars which are more weatherproof. Not really sure about the talking to your family thing but my Mum usually sees the worst in things, then I do them anyway and it turns out alright. Do you need to sell your car before you can afford to pay for the bike and CBT? Meet in the middle a bit to start with then sell your car if/when they calm down about it. What if you don’t turn out to enjoy biking? My husband found it very physical but he did have a 15 mile ride to work. He much prefers sitting comfortably in a car now

  • Thank you that's such a long time that's great, I love cars too but bikes just seem like so much more fun. And i love the community and comradery when it comes to bikers too
