Question about ASD and ADHD crossover.

I was recently diagnosed with ASD at the age of 29 and I've been wondering if anything was missed, having had the assessment online over a video call I've been wondering if anything has been missed.

One of the main standouts for me is the potential crossover of symptoms for ASD and ADHD and is it possible that my ASD is more like ADHD. As an example I sometimes struggle with eye contact, social ques, stimming and stuttering when overly stressed, hyper sensitive hearing. But I'm also easily distracted, have a short attention span (mainly thing that don't grab my attention) but also feel a lot more easily distracted when I'm stressed and feeling particularly burnt out.

What I would like to know is; Are there symptoms of ASD and ADHD that crossover, that make both diagnosis similar to one another?

  • yes, so correct, the assessment teams vary in skills, tim,e money, staff

  • I had my autism diagnosis recently confirmed, and the consultant psychiatrist herself was not even sure whether I had ADHD or EUPD Rolling eyes she eventually settled on 'ADHD traits with autism and EUPD'. I don't think many mental health diagnoses are set in stone - it seems to depend on who you see.

  • i was diagnosed with autism but i believe i have adhd as well having read up on it but i cant see any advantage in getting a adhd diagnosis as well. First of all ADHD is very common, 5% of all males may have it. Most are undiagnosed so it could be higher.

It is a very common diagnosis with autism. Many people get a diagnosis for ADHD then ASD afterwards. Some like me are the other way around ASD first followed by ADHD.

Yes there is a big overlap between autism and ADHD traits and it would take a professional to actually diagnose the ADHD as well if you think it has been missed.

Other stuff gets missed as well eg OCD

  • I think it's quite common for autistic to also have adhd I think i have some adhd traits that conflict with autistic traits it gets quite confusing sometimes

  • Yeah that him. Nice chap. Clear explanations

  • The two can go together. I saw a few you tube videos by a lad with both who explained the relationship between the two. If I find it again, I'll post a link. Meanwhile, try searching youtube.

  • I'm just reading a journal article published this month about how ASD and ADHD brains have similarities.

This website (NAS) will have some great info, too, I'm sure.

I'm not an expert - I'm still learning, hence the reading - but from what I've read so far a diagnosis of ASD is often accompanied with an ADHD diagnosis. I don't know what the likelihood is - certainly, not everyone with ASD will have ADHD. It's possible to have both or just one. If you have doubts about the ASD diagnosis and/or suspect ADHD, I'd say it's worth bringing that up with your assessor or whoever you have contact with.
