Delayed exhaustion after exertion or stress?

Does anyone else experience delayed exhaustion of about 2 days after exertion (e.g. physical exercise) or high stress?

Over the last decade I've noticed I have a delay that's around 2 days. On the day and the day after the exertion/stress, I feel fine. But the second day I am totally exhausted. 

The timing varies a little - it's not always 2 days.

For me, the exhaustion is all-encompassing and I feel very ill with nausea, air hunger, body aches and pains, and it has led to melt downs and shut downs when at its most intense. The whole day is usually written off.

It's making judging appropriate levels of exercise and activities difficult with the feedback being so late. I may continue to do more things on the same day or day after without realising I have delayed repercussions on the way. I've tried resting extra, just in case, but the delayed reaction still happens.

Medical professionals haven't been able to help so far. But all medical tests have happened to be on days when I'm not experiencing this issue and I'm feeling fine. Even tried to force it to happen for some tests, but I failed!

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any clues?

    I've delved deep into things like vitamins. (Actually, taking too much of a vitamin can harm, so be careful!) But I have worked with medical professionals, nutritional therapists (able to do diagnostic tests privately), other holistic people and still stumped for ideas. It has been more than a decade, yet still feel at square 1.

    HOWEVER, I am learning of 'comorbidities' related to autism. I already had something diagnosed that has a higher likelihood of occurring in autistic people, so I'm wondering about other things. Hence, asking in this forum in particular to see if any other autistic people had any lived experiences the same as mine - perhaps it would help me learn about other comorbidities I hadn't yet thought of.

  • another thing to do is to keep a diary of all the events in your day and see if that jogs any new clues 

  • u may be running out of a particular mineral or vitamin or other chemical eg salt

    your body is full of biochemical cycles  something could be disrupting one.

    do u take multivitamins  that also have  a large number of  minerals.---- if u dont give them a go

    they wont harm you so its worth  a try

    the other thing is to ask around your family for anyone else with this condition 

  • Thanks for sharing this. This was another theory I had over the years.

    Although I can't really tell, maybe there are some background things that remain 'switched on' for the 2 days... before it finally realises it's safe to let go and rest, or resources run out. I genuinely cannot detect these if this is the case and I'd say I'm very in tune with my body compared to the average person, but I still can't rule this idea out. Maybe it's simply undetectable. Hmm.

  • It can take a couple of days to catch up with me, I think when you finally get a good enough nights sleep or rest your body stops releasing adrenaline/cortisol etc all the chemicals that keep you going when you’re stressed and tired. I usually feel more tired after a good nights sleep when I’ve had a few days bad sleep. I don’t feel ill though just really tired

  • Haha I love that! That's a brilliant alternative to the spoon theory! I might borrow that for explaining the concept to others.

    What doesn't make sense for me (and doesn't seem to be explained with the spoon / beer theory) is that I can have genuine rest from the time of the exertion/stress until the 2 days afterward... yet it doesn't make a jot of difference. I do not feel depleted during that time in between either.

    What I experience is quite tricky to explain, especially as it isn't logical.

    Everything else in my world matches up with the spoon / beer theory, though. I am very familiar with this way of living. My energy used to be much more restricted than it is now.

    My current theory is that there must be a metabolic process in my body that takes ~2 days to complete, yet it is not functioning normally. And/or something autoimmune related.
