Autism in York

Hello!!
So long story short; my GP informed my that York (where I’m from) commission services to diagnose Autism, but not for supporting individuals with Autism after they are diagnosed???. I am unable to access ANY help after reviving my diagnosis at 22 years old in March this year. I know for a fact I am not the only person going through this- it breaks my heart and it needs to change. I know health care services are commissioned based on a post code lottery and how ‘in need’ the service is to the local community; so if anyone lives in York and has a story like this please let me know!! Maybe we could start a petition?

It's a common thing - I went private and was diagnosed mid-life. Although I can get follow-up with my assessment team it costs a packet. This ... after being misdiagnosed for years. Because I knew how to mask and force myself to function it was written off as depression.

Most of the support I get is online and through my own reading.

I'm surprised there isn't more stuff in York though (lovely city - very vibrant, easily one of my faves in the UK). I did stumble across York Autistic Meet-up from the livewellyork.co.uk website, which looks to have been suspended since September 2020.

It's not much but it might be worth dropping them a line to see if they're aware of anyone through their networks who could support you.

Tell me about it!! Im really sorry you went through that and I hope things are better for u?

I have turned to the internet and reading books to try help me understand things better as well, it just feels like I’m not really moving forward.

Thanks so much for posting that link I’ll deffo check it out- very scared about group meet ups but maybe I should try pushing myself a little.
