I may be over-reacting, but you can never be too safe when using online forums. So, this is a reminder for everyone using this forum. I have noticed certain forum members have a habit of inviting people to exchange private messages without any prior contact.  The advice from the NAS is quite clear about private message settings: We do not recommend that you accept private messages from "Everyone". Please choose either "Friends only" or "No one".

I realise that I may be paranoid about online safety, so I hope this does not offend anyone, but please remember that this is a public forum used by vulnerable adults and adults who may be in distress. If you are seeking advice on this forum, please be careful with members trying to solicit you into exchanging private messages with the promise of personal or professional advice. If a forum member invites you to exchange private messages with them without any previous contact or without being connected as a friend, please do not feel pressured into doing so.

  • yes set your profile setting to "friends only" at a minimum so that just your friends can talk to u via PM.  The PM system is useful when you what a 1 to 1 chat thats quick and has more personal details and  without someone else seeing.

    for some people the "invites friend"s isnt working  ( device/browser issues ? )  so they have to leave the setting to "Everyone" if they want to chat via  PM with any people at all.

    I have been using it for years its qood except when 3/4 people want to talk to you then it becomes hard work

    I guess I'm new to this forum and so I'm sticking to the rules very strictly. It does say  "Friends only" or "No one" so it is implying that it's wrong to ask people to send private messages without knowing them beforehand.

    generally u wait a bit ----- but i my case i have asked to talk to someone immediately, or have them to PM me or I PM them  ( depending on their device and settings ) because they where suidical and needed help immdiately and in private.

    They have since thanked me for helping them in their time of need.

    BTW the PM has just been fixed. it wasnt working for months but its up again now just in time.
