son self harming, please help.....

my son age 8 1/2, has autism. lately its got much much worse and he is really hurting himslef, smacking his self in the face, now punching himself in the face and chest. banging his head against his bedroom wall / floor. at school he bangs his head on the desk. he has marks/bruises all the time.

its getting me down, i am heartbroken. the drs wont help. i have been twice now, they say 'we cant medicate' and 'we will call mental health again' yet i dont hear from them . so i got the number for mental health but they say to call disibility team , who a month ago still havent got back to me. i know i need to chase them all the time, but my depression is so bad now i find it hard to even get up in a morning, let alone fight for my son. i know i need to, i want to, but its so hard.

he is so angry all the time. were all suffereing so much, and i dont know what else to do.

do any of you have advice on hopw i can stop his harming.?  i tried cuddling him, talking to him to leaving him in his room. but nothing works. the shouting is so bad, i am worried we get evicted for his shouting. ???

thankyou xxx

  • hi smileforlife - my son went through a period of self harming.  He would be loud + very upset.  The professionals were kind, but apart from suggesting distraction techniques, which can be useful depending on the situation, they were unable to help in any way.  There may be info via the home page if you haven't already looked.  Just like yours my son also had bruises.  It is very distressing.  He may be doing this to get the intolerable build up of stress "out of his head".   There will be a trigger, or triggers.  My son could say what had seriously upset him so we had to find a way of removing the stress.  Do you know what might be causing this?   Anything changed at home? Is he ok at school?  Some children appear to cope at school but then let all their stress out at home (see other posts on this site).  I really know how you feel.  Anxiety + depression make it even more difficult but they are a normal reaction under the circumstances.  I hope you both get some relief very soon.
