Evolution

ND individuals are predominantly marginalised by society . Through lack of understanding. But I was thinking today about how many breakthroughs and advances in science and other areas often come from people who are ND.

So surely if we look at the reason for different neuro-types within human evolution, ND minds have evolved to bring our species forward?

So why doesn't the wider populus recognise this, support and elevate these minds more effectively?

  • i wouldnt be able to comment on this. my genetic knowledge is way out of date.  Creating a new species is a very complex problem.

  • yes there is something going on ,alot more autistic people ,i don't think it is just more visible .

If you look at the extremes they have always been visible.

  • I find it interesting that the first study I quoted suggested autistic people display above average "positive assortative mating" (aka having kids with people like yourself) which is one of the precursors you'd need to grow into your own sub species.

  • It could be both. Maybe our hunter gatherer ancestors were more likely to be autistic. And now as tech is reshaping society some of those old genes are starting to become more dominant in the gene pool.

  • because it is survival of the fittest.

the first book to read is Darwin's, Origin of the species, which explains hos theory of Evolution, it is one of the best books  I have studied

then read the Selfish Gene theory.

then you start looking into group fitness, sexual selection, mutations, mimicking, parasitology, mass extinctions.

    The subject is enormous

  • I definitely feel like I'm just about enduring living in it.

  • brain size is getting smaller

we are losing are wisdom teeth

people are getting an extra vein in there arms

people have the ability to digest milk

We are always evolving as a species ,personally i think we are more likely to be an old off shoot ,more evolved to live in small family groups ,with much less social interaction , semi nomadic hunter gather type [would suit me fine somewhere hotter].

All this modern progress has sort of messed everything up to the extent of the possibility of actually destroying the whole actual planet ,some how i can't call that progress

  • I think there's some fine tuning in there to do with IQ - if you think of a typical population from hundreds of years ago, there would be a range of jobs - general labourers, servants, cooks, millers, bakers etc.     The brighter ones would gravitate to better / easier jobs where their higher intelligence would make them more useful.

The bones that get dug up and analysed don't come with a CV so there's so many assumptions applied that it doesn't really qualify as science - in my opinion.

The only ones that would be properly identified would be the richer people with a recent gravestone - the huge majority would be unmarked.

  • True I think they just deduce that they were stronger because their lifestyle was a physical one and they just would've grown up strong but as time went on and we developed tools and machinery and then heavy machinery the needs for physical strength lessened. and the need for cleverer minds increased. As time went on the needs changed and people evolved and adapted over thousands of years and here we are now where some of the most significant changes to society are because of the work of autistic people.

  • I think we're just in amongst the typical genetic variations in the human dna - we obviously have our uses - the super-bright tech-pushers and the super-sensitive situational predictors - who detect things before the general population.

The nerds build computers but the sensors have no major role in current life - but they have to endure living in it.

    That is my Theowy.

  • I mean there is some scientific evidence along these lines https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27445671/ https://www.nature.com/articles/mp201512. The hypothesis as I understand it is that genes that promote high intelligence don't give you autism on their own but may if you get certain combinations of them. So they are selected for by natural selection whenever intelligence becomes important in mating.

  • The problem with looking at bones is that they grow in size and density depending on the physical tasks they had to perform through their life - classic is a pro-tennis player - their right arm bones are significantly bigger and denser than the left.

And you have to account for sample sizes - this is fairly new so the 'knowledge' is young and incomplete.

  • I have actually read articles several years ago, which discuss how ASD could be the next evolution of the human race. The fact that the spectrum is so different from one end to the other is because nature is trying to get the balance right. It has been argued that this evolution is being brought on to supply problem solvers who can address the issues currently being experienced and prevent the future extinction of the human race. Very interesting concept.

  • I remember reading something that was basically a theory that autistic types of people who are very intelligent and creative, people like Bill Gates, Elon Musk and the like and even everyday day "normal" people like us who are autistic but smarter than a lot or most of the NT people we come across could be something like the beginning of an evolutionary step up of humans or be some kind of off shoot not so much a new species but almost just a different type of human like how there are people today who's DNA is a has traces of Neanderthal genetics because it turns out that the early homo-sapiens sometimes had babies with the neanderthals even though mostly the neanderthals died out because we killed them and becasue they just weren't smart enough to survive.

Autistic people come about as a result of genetic mutations that affect how are brains develop hence why we lack in certain centres of our brains but the other parts might have more/stronger connection between them, as a result for example the part of brain that would interpret and deal with mathematics will be very strong or the visual sector of Temple Grandin's brain is much larger and stronger than an average NT person (she actually did brain scans and you can see it, its quite amazing.) and that's why she is so good at what she has done with the way she designed the slaughter houses in America.

It's a interesting topic but there isn't much research on it as far as I can see anyway and the way it looks to me of those theories are correct is that this evolutionary step is in it's infancy and realistically its takes thousands and thousands of years to see significant changes on a large scale throughout the whole human population.

I think the current agreed upon scientific theory on human evolution at the moment is that as time goes on and from what we've seen in the past is that on average people now are being born with slightly larger brains and growing up to be again on average physically weaker than more ancient people based on bones I think I don't know how they do it but I think they can tell from bone structure how strong people may have been. And that also because of the medical innovations we've created are immune systems are getting much stronger than older generations and they can see that even with recent history too.

  • You are totally right. What I really meant to say was more of a question about appreciating differences, much like you find in a bee hive, of roles individuals take or are suited for. Aren't we just failing to help ND minds stand up and be counted for all the talents being ignored?
