Housing Decision and need advice

Hello Everyone,

Recently i have been getting support social inclusion & housing support worker who i've been engaging with since september last year. The support worker initially wanted to place me into a new scheme that is similar to assisted/supported living except i have my own self contain flat, my own tenancy, pay my own bills but there's support available when i want it from nine in the morning to five in the evening within the same building to help me apply for work, help arrange transportation, Assist me going to the doctors if needed. The support worker assured me that i am ideal candidate as the scheme is designed for people with autism who don't have an intellectual disability and is often used a stepping stone for few years before helping me live completely independant. but in order to qualify for it my social worker needed apply for funding and i didn't qualify for the funding. We have been having nothing but issues with local authority and the local housing register.

It's gotten to the point that everyone that's engaging with me other the social inclusion & housing support worker is suggesting temporary accommodation because i am twenty four and where i am currently living in a static home on my parents property isn't ideal as it hasn't got any cooking or bathroom facilities and i have to use the main houses kitchen and bathroom. My entire family have significant substance abuse problems, step father is abusive, my mother is chronically ill with heart failure and lung disease but her personality disorder is preventing her from leaving my step father and is refusing to quit working. my sister and her partner and their daughter have basically given up on helping themselves and refuse to get help. It's gotten to the point that their bad decisions and choices are mentally & physically crippling me & apparently to the social worker & support worker they are deliberately sabotaging me and the best option is for me to just leave,

Biggest question is do i go for the temporary accommodation or wait in the situation i am in for more permanent housing. the temporary accommodation could last as long as two years in a bed and breakfast or wait in the situation i am currently  in and hope that my social inclusion & housing support worker will helps find a suitable housing association flat. I want to leave but it's the not knowing what i am moving too, how long it's going to be.

I am also stressing that if something comes up and i leave how are my family are going to react because i am currently paying for the entire houses bills including internet which is in my name and the electric & water. I am really finding it difficult to make a decision. anyone else wiser that could help with their input or someone in a similar situation explain their experience.

  • Sounds like you're between a rock and a hard place. I hope something comes up for you.

Unless I'm missing something, it does appear you only have 2 choices at present.

    1. Stay where you are and do everything in your power to secure a suitable, permanent  home by going down every possible avenue and contacting every organisation you can including your MP for advice or help until you get something. Keep plugging away at this.

    2. Move out to the temporary accommodation and do the same from there.

I don't know which option would be more favourable for you in the eyes of the authorities involved so you could find that out first. Also if it is affecting your mental health contact your GP for treatment. This should be your number one priority.  Regarding paying the bills for your family, I'm sure 4 adults can manage that between themselves. They all sound like they need help, especially your Mother but if they are in denial it could take a long time. You can only do what you think is right and moving out may force some change on them for the better.   Don't give up and do not take no for an answer.
