The actual assessment

Hi. So after putting it off for almost two years today I’ve finally done an online request to my GP asking for a referral to be assessed. My anxiety has got real throughout lockdown and i think I’m at the point now I need to know either way if I have autism. I’m not even sure if my GP will agree to refer me and I’m dreading the telephone consult I’ll have to have with her as I’m not great at talking over the phone. I feel like once she knows I’m married have 3 children, can drive, run a household etc she will dismiss it altogether. I learnt to mask from an early age so outwardly I’m sure I look fine but inside I’m struggling. Can anyone advise what I can expect from the assessment if my GP agrees to refer me?

  • I put this off for a long time as told by a Psychiatrist that I could not possibly be autistic.  I then later went for a GP referral but due to Covid there was such a long wait so I had to do this privately.  I work full-time, have my own flat with my partner and do all the things you specify apart from the kids.  My GP was really kind but I get how hard it can be to communicate and agree that a list is much needed.   I just wanted to know one way or the other - GP does not assess as with most things of course but they do understand.
