Supermarket fatigue

Hi everyone

I'm Andrew and I was diagnosed with autism today - bit of a shock as I'm 47! Anyway, for many years now when I go shopping at the supermarket (I've got kids so normally a big shop), within minutes I start to get really fatigued. I now have to listen to a podcast/audiobook to keep me from getting too tired as I shop.  I've always wondered why this happens but I'm now thinking that there must be a correlation with my ASD. Does anyone else have the same issue or am I totally barking up the wrong tree?

Looking forward to connecting.

Andrew

  • Hi Andrew!

Congratulations - welcome to the club.

Yep - any loud, bright, crowded or overwhelming will probably affect you - equivalent to going into a Vegas casino.     Some supermarkets are better than others-  Sainsbury's used to have a quiet hour for people who can't take the normal noise - dunno if they still offer it in their post-covid plan.

  • Thanks - not a club I was expecting to join, but makes sense now. Yes, I think you're probably right. Funny thing is even when it's quiet it affects me - like my brain is expecting it to now. At least with the scanners now I dont have to talk to anyone!
