Want to get involved in sports activities, mostly football.

Hi all,

I am a big fan of sport and have a big passion for football, I used to play football a lot years ago with friends but over the years of being out of touch with them and not making new friends, I haven't played any.

Just wondering if anyone knew of any good organizations I could look at joining/taking part so I can get out and play again?

I have Aspergers which makes it hard for me in social situations especially new ones but my confidence does get better the more I get used to something.

I'm 28 from Portsmouth if that helps.

Thanks.

  • If you go on to the FA's website you can put in your postcode and it will bring up a list of all the teams and clubs local to you. It will let you choose if you want 11 aside or small sided football ect and you can go from there.

It is very daunting joining a new team, I had knee surgery 3 years ago and hadnt played since. It took me to have all of the first lockdown to have minimal stresses to actually get the time and focus in to work on the physio work and by the summer I was itching to play again properly. Before this I had only played for 2 teams, one for 10 years and the other 7.

I found the club local to me which is just grassroots Sunday league as I didn't need it to be competitive I just wanted to get back to playing. I bailed the first time I was supposed to go, think I just got far too anxious and had a fairly busy day before I was due to go to training. Two weeks later I knew once I had contacted them to say I would be coming to this one and apologised that I couldn't make the one before .. I had to attend otherwise I don't think I could have tried a third time.

It was the best thing I did! I started August and we only had a few games in before we went into tier 4. I've not had to do any of the socials with the pandemic and it's been great we've just appreciated being back at training with the potential of a few games to come over the next month or two.

I always find it tough getting there but once I'm there I'm fine I find football is my happy place and my escape, I don't think about anything apart from playing. We had our first session back tonight and I feel great for being back on the pitch, Im not the most technical player but my vision and movement makes me see things on the pitch others struggle to see.

Being back in a football setting after it being my entire life before I got injured has showed me just how much I needed it and how good it can be for me.

Good luck with your search I recommend braving it and contacting a team near you, I found it very tough leading up to it but once i had done it and attended I haven't looked back!
