Housing benefit rates for Autistic Adults

Hi. I'm a single 30 year old male with Asperger's. I'm moving out of my Parents as I find it stressful and I feel I'm not in control of my own life. I need my own space and prefer not to be around people like many with Asperger's. I'm currently out of work due to Covid causing my business to close. I receive Universal Credit at present. I'm looking to apply for housing benefit until I get a new job. With me being a single male under 35, I am only entitled to the shared accommodation rate through the council. The issue it, that defeats the whole purpose of moving. I find it hard ot be around people in everyday life. Never mind moving into a house with random people who I don't know and try to live with them. I was wondering of anyone knows is there any rules within the housing benefit system that allow for people with ASD to the one bedroom rate to allow for their own space/dependant living? Surly they cant expect someone who has ASD who struggles being around others to move in with total strangers in shared accommodation? I know that shared rate is just a rate of benefit and you can still move into a private residence but the amount that the shared rate is set , you cant get a house or flat. Obviously when i have a new job I will be paying my rent myself. Thanks

  • Hi,

I would try to gather as much information on the subject as I could and then see what options you have. Citizens Advice, Housing Rights, Shelter etc. UC is a nasty system designed to put you off claiming it. There is also advice on benefits on this website although it does seem you would fair better if entitled to DLA or PIP. Good luck.
