Housing

Hi everyone.

Been thinking about it a lot recently and I don't know what I would do about housing in the future. I'm 28 and still living at home and cared for by my mum and I know she's not gonna be around forever. I don't know a single thing about housing and stuff like that. I don't work due to my condition and have no friends or partner and just don't know where to go in my life.

  • Been googling to find more info and can’t really find much, all I find is care homes. I think I could live independently with some help when I need it.

Was looking at housing benefit but not sure how that all works.

  • Firstly, you will not find the information on the internet for specialised housing support. The only way you can access this assistance is by going through a need assessment.

To get a need assessment performed you need to contact the local authority yourself where they will arrange a date and time to meet you where you reside where they will ask questions and evaluate your needs. Typically it’s a social worker who will carry this out the needs assessment but it can also be a support worker or mental health nurse. They will then work with you one to one or signpost you to organisations that can help.

During the assessment they will ask you what you need help with, try and explain that you want to become independent and they will look into housing support which will open supported, assisted or independent housing options and possible offer you a set amount of support anything from 6 to 30 hours a week when you move out of your parents but depends on your ability. They will also help you if you need assistance applying for benefit proving you with a support worker who will help fill out benefit forms and set up direct debts and bills.

the needs assessment like I said can lead to arrange of other support including finding social event and opportunities to meet other neurological diverse individuals, employment support, education opportunities and help arrange transportation and resale adjustments that will enable to succeed.
