To school or homeschool

My daughter is high functioning ASD. She appears to enjoy school when she’s there but really has over load when back at home. After being back to school post lock down for two weeks, which she has been buzzing about chatting all the way home, we’ve had two horrendous weekends of total disregulation and aggression. She always says she doesn’t want to go in but usually comes home very happy ( initially). She’s only 9 and I worry how we can deal with her outbursts as she gets bigger and stronger. It’s also really effecting my 7 year old. Any advice, experiences welcome.

  • My two pence:

Assuming she has no difficulties learning :

    1. Don't leave it all to the "professionals". Most teachers aren't trained on how to best educate autistic children without learning disabilities. They seem to them what they would call "normal" and so just do what they do for NT pupils. That can get you by but misses out on big opportunities (especially early on) to take advantage of autistic traits in educational settings for your daughters benefit. Learning what strengths she has due to her autism that can be used for learning and exploiting those for her education benefit is something that I wish more parents of autistic children would do. Not for them but for their kids own benefit.
    2. Find her special interest in a school subject. If you can do that she will get her first glimpse of something that is deep, meaningful and mentally nourishing to her (maybe even at 9) and that she can do for the rest of eternity. Should give her a bit more balance. A autistic kid can't be causing a rumble if they are doing what they ABSOLUTELY LOVE!
    3. These days there is a mountains of education resources: Brilliant, You Tube, Books off Amazon (there are books on everything, even how to learn. Even books on the brain and how to use it. A brain owners user manual :) ) ,  the internet in general, tutors etc. You aren't 100% dependent on  the educational system so use them.
