Will a diagnosis effect my job application?

I was hoping someone might be able to offer me some advice. I am about to start a new chapter of my life and i am thinking about doing a teaching course in the hopes of becoming a primary school teacher. I am a self diagnosed high functioning autistic and i want to arrange an appointment with my doctor and start the process of getting my diagnosis. I have no idea if getting my diagnosis would have any influence when i am ready to apply for the job. I am not sure if a medical check is something that would be done and if it was and my autism was on record that it would make it difficult or impossible to become a teacher.

I would really appreciate any guidance, advice or just thoughts on this.

Thank you so much for your help guys.

  • I'm a teacher and was recently diagnosed.  I think teaching is a great job but the first few years are hard. Then you get into the swing of things.  I really don't know about disclosing to prospective employers.  I disclosed to manager but had worked there some years. I generally think the education sector is very supportive of neurodiverse individuals. Autism doesn't make anything impossible but be mindful of your mental health. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.

  • Thank you. I'm past the application stage and I'm now at the conditional offer stage. I have to speak to occupational health next week about my anxiety and waiting for autism assessment. Very daunting.

  • Thank you for the reply. I had seen that there were some teachers on here which made me feel better. I hope everything goes well for you today and with your job application with the NHS.

    Thank you.

  • I'm about to find this out next week for a post with the NHS. There are autistic teachers on here so I'd guess the answer is no, and you would be able to have reasonable adjustments, even if you only wanted them for interviews.

I'm also currently self-diagnosed. Initial assessment is today!
