Concerns regarding mental heath

We are parents to our 27 year old son. Recently life has become very hard for him. Due to his autism and OCD his toilet habits are taking over his life. He is now spending up to 7 days in the toilet with no food and water. GP has visited home and can see that he is putting himself at risk.

mental health are trying to help but as he has mental capacity they listen to him. When he is in the toilet for 7 days, we do not feel he has mental capacity.

So worried.

just wondered if there is anyone out there going through something similar

  • Are you sure it’s just OCD? In most houses toilets are the only rooms with locks. I know as a child I was known to lock my self in the bathroom when life was getting too much. It was the only way to gureentee alone time from my brother who didn’t really get personal space as a concept. Also does this toilet have a tap? I can’t see some one worry’s  about hygiene drinking from the toilet, even a tank.

  • omg, this is actually quite serious. I really hope the medical professionals do what's needed. Seclusion is definitely not a good sign. You may read more about the hidden risks of autism here www.spectrumnews.org/.../

  • For me not eating was a way of taking control,i had periods where i would starve for a week at a time ,i would sip a little water.I look back now and realize i was not understanding my emotions. One time i was actually reliving a ptsd event  which coincided with a time of  change. just couldn't see what was happening. In my mid twenties i went down to 71/2 stone , should be about 12 .I would suggest trying to push for further help ,just keep pushing and try to think of the whole picture ,there will be a reason behind the behaviour .

  • um, well, there's water in the toilet tank. not the toilet bowl, the tank. altho most people wouldn't drink that water, but it's probably quite safe.

is he, or has he been, in therapy?

i hope for the best for you and your son, though.

  • he must be getting water somewhere 4/5 days would kill most people or put them in hospital with damage,,, 6 days should kill him.

2 days without water and i was almost unable to stand.

to me this is some sort of attempted suicide

in whic case,,,,  ask them to section him. I am no expert.

    or

    he is tricking you,

search the toilet for bottles of water and check the cistern level. I mean he should be unable to walk out of that toilet after 4 -7 days.

    sectioning

"You should only be sectioned if: you need to be assessed or treated for your mental health problem. your health would be at risk of getting worse if you did not get treatment. your safety or someone else's safety would be at risk if you did not get treatment."

sorry this is happening to you,, this must be an awful experience your child is really mentally ill

I am no expert i have to say that because this situation is so serious,,, i suspect the OCD is the big issue here. it is real mental torture.

  • Saying he has mental capacity is their way of opting out I think. He Is  putting himself in danger of renal failure etc. 7 days without water is life threatening. Will he not take any water wile there., or suck some ice, etc
