Treatments for autistic people with mental health problems

Hi everyone,

I have OCD, depression, anxiety issues and probably an eating disorder. Also I am autistic. I'm currently under a mental health team and they're really bad. I often phone them everyday asking to speak to the clinical manager, but he hardly ever gets back to me. Anyways, I have been offered ERP (Exposure Response Prevention) treatment for my OCD. However, they haven't offered me anything else other than the OCD treatment. They said they'd give me 15-sessions of ERP. But the thing is is that my OCD isn't the most debilitating condition I have. It's the autism and the it's the binge eating I do on a regular basis.

Has anyone had ERP treatment for their OCD? I'm worried it won't work that well because sometimes I don't understand things and then get too anxious to say anything. Also my OCD isn't the main condition that affects me currently.

I'm just sick of and tired of no one listening to me at the mental health team I'm under. They're really bad. :'(

  • You have a lot of issues  so you must have quite a bit of fight in you just to get out of bed.

The ERP treatment for OCD ------ i would go for it. It is better then nothing.   If you make progress and reduce your OCD that will improve your confidence.

Maybe your mental health team  are very busy due to the increase in mental issues caused by Covid.

I have very mild OCD but I find it very distressful. So anything that reduces your OCD would be a big achievement and might reduce your obsessive eating as well. You might be able to suggest the person delivering the ERP to include your obsessive eating in the ERP treatment.

As far as I know there are no treatments for Autism itself. If I am wrong someone please reply here ( maybe CBT ? )

BTW just found this site. It contains explanations of ERP and CBT for OCD
