Hello all,

my 3 (nearly 4) year old son was diagnosed with ASD last year. We are having issues with his nursary setting as he often lashes out biting/hitting other children when they are playing with something he wants, or he is asked by staff to do something he doesn’t want to do ie toilet time. Does anyone have any tips or strategies for this behaviour? 
currently we are trying positive praise on behaviour we do want to see, we are using minimal language eg when he hits we say kind hands only, Any tips much appreciated!

  • Do you give him a warning before toilet time or anything else? We did/and still give our 14 y.o a 5 minute warning before we change something/do something else. He is lashing out since someone is playing with the toy he would like, so can he let someone know that he wants to play with it, or when the behaviour starts can you direct him to do something else he likes then let him play with whatever he wanted? Is there something about toilet time he doesn't like? ie, the feeling of the seat. Positive praise is amazing to do. Is he verbal or non-verbal? If you can figure out the root of the bottom(if you haven't already) it would really help. I hope this helps and sorry if it doesn't. This is from my past experience. Good luck!

    Thank you for the advice! He does get given warnings and also has visuals shown to him before hand, he is non verbal which makes it harder! The nursary have described it as fight or flight and his first instinct is to lash out, mostly at home when this happens I can work out why but at nursary they feel it’s because they are asking him to do something he doesn’t want to do ie go to the toilet or tidy up time!
