Moving during assessment?

Hello there,

Sorry if this a bit of a broad question and been asked before.

I am 18y/o and currently in the middle of being diagnosed for autism (I have a GP appt next Monday and I'm pretty sure I will get referred for assessment).

I am aware that the waiting list for at least CAMHS in my area for an assessment is currently two years (which is ridiculous) and I'm sure adult services will be just as long. As a student in my last year of A Level, I will soon be moving to uni in Sept. I have chosen to move a long distance from Sussex to Belfast. What I am wondering, is what will happen to my assessment? Will the assessment case be moved to Belfast authorities?  Or will I have to return home to undergo the assessment?

Sorry if this is a silly question, I've never had to wait so long for an appointment before.

Thank you very much

  • That is very helpful, thank you. I think I may look into the Belfast waiting times and see if there are any benefits to moving my information (I'll probably be back and forth anyway!).

  • I'm afraid I don't specifically know about the assessment, the only similar experience I have is foot surgery. I started the process of going to the specialist in Hampshire, but moved to Gloucestershire. I had to start the whole process over again as I was now registered at a different doctors surgery and had a permanent address in Gloucestershire.

I had to move back to Hampshire straight after my surgery and my physiotherapy took longer to organise as a result. Whereas I would have gone straight in up in Gloucestershire because they had all my information, I had to first get an appointment with my GP which was difficult as the reception staff at the GP office were like bulldogs guarding the appointments calendar, my GP had to then refer me and I needed to sort out an appointment.

As a student, you may find that your able to maintain contact with your own GP surgery where you currently live, and still use the same address rather than change all your information to your student home. It's best to have a conversation with your GP. See what they think will be the best thing to do. You may even find that the area you move to has a shorter wait time?
