Does anyone know what support is available for autistic people trying to relocate?

Hi I've been trying to move for over a year now. My Girlfriend lives about 70 miles away but her local council won't entertain peopel applying for social housing who have not already lived in the area for at least 5 years which prevents that course of action and private landlords have no interest in renting to benefit claimants. I did managed to contact one housing group who were supposed to cater for autistic people but since I don't have a social worker they were unable to help.

It's really starting to impact my mental wellbeing not being able to see my girlfriend particularly with all the lockdown stuff and I'm feeling trapped. Does anyone know of any systems which may be in place to help me move?

  • It Really depends on your current situation and the need to move or relocate to somewhere else. You are aware that you can request a needs assessment which your local authority cannot deny you. Once assessed the the professional most commonly a social worker will come to visit you and perform the assessment. When they have completed the assessment and they have assessed a need they will sign post you to organizations and work alongside you and other organisations to achieve things like moving into suitable accommodation and possible independent living. They can also help with finding and funding transportation to education opportunities and find and assist you with work based programmes to help you find sustainable employment.

Local authorities outside of London usually require you live within the local district for six months before allowing you to register a housing application however if you have certain and specific need you may be able to apply for any housing in any district with the county with the help of support worker.
