Phones

I don't use the phone at all. My speech is unreliable.

When I'm under stress I either cannot speak at all,

or I rely on a list of 'stock answers' aimed at getting through a situation as quickly as possible.

I can't think what to say fast enough to reply, before the other person has said something else. .

My GP practice has me on their text service.

I just got a text from them, with their number blocked so I cannot reply.

It says "Please phone the surgery to make an appointment for a telephone consultation with your doctor".

Well no.

  • Hi, Further North:

Thanks so much for your post. I’m sure there are others on this forum who have experienced the exact same issue, possibly in multiple contexts.

I don’t know if this idea appeals to you, but you might consider sending an email to someone from this website (the charity that hosts this page) asking for assistance contacting your doctor’s office. Alternatively, if you have a case worker/support worker, you could perhaps email him or her to request the same help.

Also, if you were feeling up to it and wanted to help your doctor’s office, you could perhaps provide them feedback, including with the help of a support worker. You could let them know that for some patients, asking them to telephone the doctor for services is impracticable/impossible. They might then take related steps to be more sensitive to the issue as they move forward.

Thanks again for your helpful post. Have a great day,

    Elizabeth
