Help with housing

Hello.

For sometime now I've been really struggling with what to do about going through the right channels about housing.. I was diagnosed in 2018 with autism and everything about me makes so much sense..

But now my biggest struggle is what to do and how to properly move into my own place so I can have my personal space, im 27 and I dont want to live with my family for the rest of my life, people say its easier etc but its really not...

  • I went down the private rental route - if you have the money for the deposit or family can front this it’s way better than council housing as you get to choose where you live rather than having someone else’s choice thrust upon you.  - if you know the area you want to live in look up the LHA allowance. It’s calculated weekly and most flats are monthly rent - so multiply the LHA by 52 then divide by 12. That’s the figure you have to work to. 

    Your current issue is age - you’d only be eligible for funding for a room in a house share I believe. Oddly they don’t determine that someone needs an entire one bedroom flat until 35 I think it is which is plain stupid if you ask me. If you have a formal diagnosis, you may be able to use this to argue for the one bedroom rate - citing that living in a communal setting would aggravate your traits. Though I don’t know how this process would work.

    If you are planning on staying in your immediate area and you’ve resided there for the last 3 years - the local council will fund the LHA. If you move out of the area it comes as part of universal credit.

    Of course if you are working and in a well paid jibber- the stuff above is null and void.
