Is it common to hear quiet noises that are slightly further away (so still near by) at normal volume as if the sound was in the same place as you?

Yes - I do - I hear all noises at the same volume - conversations in other rooms are as loud as if they were next to me and the tv in this room - and the washing machine in the utility room or the dishwasher in the kitchen or sound from outside is just as annoying - it all gets too overloading and my brain processes them all in parallel until it reaches the 'too annoying' level.
During the night, if I'm awake, I put the tv on very low volume so it's just mumbling in the background.
During the day, I use distraction by watching tv while also watching youtube on mute with subtitles - overload technical input via eyes, general rubbish via the ears - the eyes normally win,.
