Spiders

Don’t know if this is the right place to discuss this but I always react to seeing a spider and will not calm down until the spider is out of sight or a while after. Do you have any strategies to prevent this, because seeing a spider is obviously inevitable and would like to be prepared for the next time

  • Don't try to avoid the spiders because that will reinforce the fear (it's the same with any phobia).

The best thing is to try to face your fear in a controlled way, in small easy steps. You could ask a friend or family member who isn't scared of spiders to help.

You could start by looking at pictures of normal household spiders or those plastic model ones from Halloween. Then maybe next time you see a dead one you could look at it so you are more familiar with its anatomy. If that is OK you could try picking it up. Next time you seen an alive one, watch it instead of avoiding it. And eventually maybe you will be comfortable enough to catch one in a glass and watch it without being scared.

You can go as slowly as you like. It's good that you want to stop panicking.

I quite like spiders and insects, probably because I grew up in an old dusty house and I kept a lot of animals. The chicken house was always full of spiders.
