What's your special interest?

I've noticed there a lot of posts on this forum about making friends and finding others who share an interest, so I thought I'd start a thread where people could talk about the stuff that really interests them and maybe connect with others who feel the same about that topic. I hope that's okay, and I'm sorry if a thread like this already exists and I missed it.

I know I have several interests which I get VERY excited about and would love to find others to geek out with on - as it can feel really lonely to not have people who share the same passion or get excited about the same things. But I also love listening to people talk about things that they're really passionate about too, so I would genuinely love to hear about everyone special interests too.

I find it really hard to make friends and am always cautious about talking about the things that really interest me, after years of being told that I'm weird/creepy/boring for getting obsessed with stuff that I like. But that's just me, and if I get passionate about something then I can't help but  focus on it. And that makes sense to me. Why wouldn't someone focus on something that makes them happy?

  • Team Jess, I think. But I was far more taken with the Lorelai and Luke story. What kind of stories do you write?

  • Driving back-routes to certain locations. I have a pig's ear out of a few attempts. But, mostly, I did well. I despise Traffic Jams, especially as I have a weak bladder.

Hot-Food counters. Mid Ulster Folk love their big feeds. I'm no exception.

Condolence. I have sent Mass Cards, and sympathy letters, to those who lost loved ones connected to ones I knew.

  • There's nothing creepy about being you. Just because the NeuroTypicals are shallow doesn't mean you have to be.

I've been lucky to have a huge and central chunk of history land on me and discover nobody's really looked at it. It's kept me fruitfully out of mischief for 16 years, with full authority, and I've spotted useful details along the way. It's a bit on hold right now while I dive into the transceptive aspect of neurophysiology, with an eye to quanta determinism in alquimia.

  • That sounds cool, I used to want to be in animation myself back in the day. I post some of the comics on the internet on occasion, but I'm hoping I can get something physically published eventually. Indeed, a graphic novel is a big task, but I'm hoping someday I'll have the ability to tackle it.

  • Don't need to see the film. I was their host Stage Manager the Saturday BR hit. Onstage in the wings. You couldn't guess how high it would get, though.

  • Somehow, I get the impression that there are no spelling mistakes - and try to think where their logical argument finishes........

    typos

"This also applies to killing off harmful vertebrae, which can otherwise not be stopped."

    'off' should be of

    'vertebrae' maybe should be 'invertebrates'

  • sorry what is the name of your organisation?

    is this it?       animalfreedom.org/.../sitemap.html

    if yes found these typos

  • Jeez I could do with more minions!

  • Animal Freedom

I guess my main SI is Animal Freedom. I realised 5 years ago that all major social change came about through social movements, and that animals needed one so we stop breeding them in captivity, separating them from their loved ones, and killing them.

So I read up a bit (actually a lot), got involved in lots of groups doing AR and vegan outreach to suss their strategies out, ran the national AR Gathering twice, got involved with the folks planning XR before it kicked off, and then left my job and starting an organisation to turn the country into one that doesn't kill or exploit animals. We're growing.

I have a tendency to turn my SI into my job, unpaid or paid, which is great, though turns my passions into hard work and responsibility!

  • u need loads of minions Slight smile

  • I have an ever revolving door of special interests. Current ones are:

    - my new running regime

    - my new friend

    - getting into the outdoors via different courses, especially winter mountaineering

    - reading about autism

    - my surviving lockdown programme

    - learning how to build a 'best practice' organisation, and building it

    - the role of narrative, story and framing in politics

    - foraging

Then I have hobbies that I approach more light heartedly.

  • i love this aspect of autism

  • There are many fans out there, the prices that the enamel roundel signs sell for reflects that. I collect as much as ephemera as possible and some of the more quirky things like fire alarm protocol signs. It’s amazing as individuals what we’re all passionate about.

  • Baking is really cool, I ca n make magazine worthy cookies but will absolutley obliterate anything else I attempt. i admire those who can bake succesfully!

  • K-pop is my special interest

I'll actually say music more broadly, however k-pop tends to be my main interest. With groups and fandoms and all that goes with it, it is easy to spiral into it. There's a lot to explore and the many groups and constant promotions make it even more easy and addicting.

I like j-pop too but I'm very particular about what type of Japanese music I like. Of course there are k-pop songs and Korean songs I dislike but the range of Korean music I listen to is a lot more broad than j-pop.

  • i seem to cycle through various interests, and then that interest seems to just........ eventually go away. and i find a new interest, and dive in, full throttle. it's kind of fun - pursuing my interest and delving in, but also tiring, as i over think. so - with each new interest, i have to learn a dizzying array of innumerable new terms - metal lip plugs, bucktails, tin, spoons, swim baits, crank baits, baits, double loop knots, palomar knots, sputnik sinkers, carolina rigs, texas rigs, pencil poppers, siwash hooks, octopus hooks, bait holder hooks, circle hooks, jigs, vertical jigging, trolling, inshore, offshore (that means on a boat, i think), ............. yes, my new interest is surf fishing. am i making it too hard on myself????

  • I don't know just how niche it is but I worked as a cartographer at Ordnance Survey for 3 years and there were quite a few people there who were big fans of that sort of thing.

  • It keeps me amused Slight smile

  • that is so niche but beautiful
